ABOUT GERMAN WINES

Germany is one of the oldest wine producing areas in the world. Although it never enjoyed the international reputation of France, Germany's white wine used to be found on every connoisseur's wine list before the last world war.

Modern German wine makers, who love to drink their wines themselves, have always thought that it is the dry crispiness of a white wine and the fruity flavor of the grapes, which makes a good wine rather than a high alcohol content. It is now for the past five years or so that one of the most prestigious wine regions in south-western Germany, Baden, is experiencing a comeback of small, privately owned wineries that produce most exquisite wines for adequate prices.

Again one has to stress that flavor and a dry taste always comes first and that alcohol content depends every year on the sun and general weather conditions. The natural sweetness of the grape juice turns - via a carefully monitored fermentation process - into alcohol. Added sugar, which turns into alcohol too, is not used as a taste enhancer in modern German wine production, to add sugar is the case in most modern, industrial wine productions around the world.

The smooth small mountains along the Rhine have always been Germany's most prominent wine areas. Rheingau, Mosel, Nahe, and Ruwer – these names ring familiar bells to many wine lovers around the globe. It is the very Riesling that has so many friends. We offer you quite a selection of Rieslings, some very dry, some slightly sweet, some deliberately sweet. There has not been any sugar added to these wines, the sweetness is retained from the grape juice. The wine makers just stop the process of fermentation and it is the totally natural product, which leaves the very elegant sweetness to your taste.

Gourmet DiningThe young and fresh wines we present to you from Germany have been harvested, barreled and bottled with utmost care and the use of next to none artificial additives.

We invite you to go on a wine tasting experience, which will take some glasses to get used to. German White's, Rose's and Red's do not overpower your gums and taste buds - what you might perceive as a first taste as light and without depth, is in fact a delicate, dry and crisp experience for the mouth and the stomach. Please bear with us, when we explain the German wines more elaborately. However, unknown things need to be explained!

France, Italy and Spain

We do not need to introduce our favorite wines from France, Italy and Spain at length. Their exquisite taste experiences speak for themselves.

You must always drink all the white, rosé and you may drink some of the red wines on this menu chilled, i.e. the wine should never have a temperature above 4°-6° Celsius / 39°-42° Fahrenheit. The great reds on this list should never be consumed warm, i.e. should never have a temperature above 18° Celsius.

The owners of KATITCHE POINT GREATHOUSE guarantee the superb quality of our selection, if you are willing to follow new avenues of taste. We think our selection goes extremely well with the sunny and tropical climate of the Caribbean. The presented wines, if consumed with moderation, are an ideal companion of a happy vacation!

Wine at sunset

We would like to make two suggestions (don't tell anybody, as all the experts might frown!): If it is hot and you want to consume a refreshing, tasteful and invigorating drink, we suggest two traditional recipes our grandparents loved:

The Spritzer (“Schorle”)
This is simple, mix:
50% sparkling mineral water
50% excellent white wine

The Cold Duck (“Kalte Ente”) Mix:
33% sparkling mineral water
33% excellent white wine
33% Champagne
peel of a whole lemon/per pitcher.

You can't do any better in summer! Obviously both of the above have to be served ice-cold.

White Wines

2007 Gutedel, dry, Winery Soder (Baden, Germany)
0,75 litre

We could write a book on the origin of this most famous Baden-grape, called the Gutedel. Many wine historians debate its origin. It is now found only in the Markgraefler-region of south-west Germany. This signature wine makes a light, pleasant and dry addition to all white meats and fish and is most perfect as a sipping wine or “Spritzer” with sparkling water. We like our good friends Doerflinger in Muellheim, who are champions of dry in Baden. Try it!  Highly recommended!
2007 Riesling, Dry, Schloss Lieser, Winery Thomas Haag (Mosel, Germany)
0,75 litre

The Riesling-grape enjoys a worldwide reputation as the king of white wines. One immediately associates the regions of Mosel, Rheingau, Nahe and Ruwer as the most prominent German Riesling-regions. The excellent and well known private winery Schloss Lieser - managed by Thomas Haag of the famous wine dynasty Haag- makes this easy drinking, highly enjoyable dry Riesling, which goes down so well in this hot climate. Our day to day wine. We love it!

2007 Riesling, Kabinett Dry, Winery Karthäuserhof (Mosel, Germany)
0,75 litre

In Germany one distinguishes between three classifications of high quality wine.  They are in rising order: Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. This dry Kabinett Riesling is the best dry Riesling, we are offering. The fantastic small winery Karthäuserhof was once an insider choice. Today these Rieslings are much thought after in the whole country. This 2007 is a real treat, if you like your Riesling dry, crisp and with a rather low alcohol content. Enjoy one more bottle!

2007 Riesling, Egon Müller, slight Sweetness, Wiltingen Schwarzhof (Mosel, Germany)
0,75 litre

Egon Mueller is is about to become famous not only in Germany, he is more and more known around the globe as a maker of  a fine edelsuess Rieslings  in the Mosel area. His Witlingen Schwarzhof  is a beautiful example of a Riesling with some sweetness. Again, this is not a desert wine, this is to be enjoyed ice-cold as an aperitif before dinner, or just try a bottle in the late afternoon instead of a cocktail. We guarantee you will enjoy this fine wine, with its comparatively low alcohol content immensely.

2007 Riesling, Brauneberg Juffer, slight Sweetness, Kabinett, Winery Fritz Haag (Mosel, Germany)

Fritz Haag is one of Germanys living legends when it comes to fine Rieslings. His wines are often sold as quickly as he puts them on the open market and are very difficult to get. We are thrilled to be able to present you this acclaimed edelsuess Riesling, Kabinett, from Fritz Haag. This is perfection. If you like this light extremly drinkable companion with a fine and delicate taste  – treat yourself to this experience as long as we can offer it!

2006 Chablis, Dry, Domaine Fevre W. (Burgundy, France)

We cannot possibly have a white wine list without French Chablis. This gem is one of our favourites. Lots of body and yet dry and crisp, exactly what you expect from Chablis of this calibre vineyard. Excellent with fish and white meat.

2005 Mersault, Dry, Winery Pierre Morey (Burgundy, France)

The Domain Pierre Morey is one of the finest, if not the best producer of one of Frances white wine legends, the Mersault. This signature white burgundy from the area Mersault is one of the wonderfully bodied, crisp and rich in taste white wines you can find in France. You should consume it with your freshly caught fish from the ocean – a wonderfull treat! This is the premier white on our wine list and the owners are very happy to consume it themselves.

2007 Sancerre, Dry, Winery Crochet (Loire Valley, France)

Red Wines

2005 Spaetburgunder, Dry, Red, Pinot Noir, Winery Huber (Baden, Germany)
Magnum-Bottle – 1,5 litres

The red pinot noir grape, which is harvested at the Kaiserstuhl in Baden, the hottest area of Germany is of muscular, yet velvet taste. It matures twelve month in a traditional large oak barrel, there it acquires some nice tannins and the nose depicts flavour of excellent wild berries. The privately owned winery Huber has done amazing work these last years and has steadily pushed their Pinot Noir to the forefront of German red burgundys.
The double sized Magnum-Bottle has always been a favourite of the true red wine lovers! Being twice of the volume of a traditional bottle it gives the red wine the opportunity to age slower and more harmonious. The difference between 0,75 litre- and 1,5 litres-bottles with exactly the same wine is more than often striking – the larger bottle brings always better quality.

2005 Volnay, Dry, Winery Violot Guillemard (Burgundy, France)
0,75 litre
0,375 litre
We only feature one red Burgundy from France, but we have selected one of the very best. Grivot is a long established star winery, which offers a very fine Vosne Romanee. For all Burgundy lovers, who know, or who want to find out! Just don't drink it too warm, please!

2003 Chateaux Caronne St. Gemme, Dry, Cru Bourgois
(Bordeaux, Haut Medoc, France)
0,75 litre
Magnum-Bottle – 1,5 litres

This is a uniquely balanced, harmonious and yet complex structured Bordeaux from Haut-Medoc. It is full with body and strength and will go very well with red meats and grilled foods of any sort. Make this you special dinner treat! We are very happy to offer this wine in a Magnum bottle as well for an extremely reasonable price.

2003 Chateau Pontent Canet, Dry, 5e Grand Cru Classe
(Bordeaux, Pauillac, France)
0,75 litre

An excellent year 2003 in Pauillac in Bordeaux, an excellent vinyard of highest reputation, and a great 5e Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux. This is the very best Claret on our wine list. Vanilla, red berries, some nice tannins, you name it – this ultra smooth and yet voluptuous Bordeaux is the high point of your meal or you celebrate it just by itself with some good cheese and bread. This is our favourite Bordeaux celebrity! For the evening together!

2006 Chianti Classico, Dry, Winery Agricola Querciabella
(Tuscany, Italy)
0,75 litre

The Chianti region in Tuscany, Italy, has enjoyed a well published rise in wine quality in the last decade. One of the finest private wineries is the winery Agricola Querciabella. This fine wine is made by biodynamic viticulture and is only available in special restaurants and selected wine merchants around Southern Europe. We are proud to offer this extremely reasonably priced award winning Chianti Classico, an excellent red wine for the hotter climates.

2006 Rosso di Montalcino, Dry, Winery Lisini (Tuscany, Italy)
0,75 litre

The Rosso di Montalcino is often described as the little brother of the great Brunello. This is an understatement! We are fortunate to have the fresh and modern wines of  Tuscanys legendary producer Lisini on our wine list. His Rosso di Montalcino is a very nice, full bodied and yet easy and smoothly drinking - typical Italian - red wine. For the BBQ dinner! All this for a very interesting price too!

2003 Brunello di Montalcino, Dry, Winery Lisini (Tuscany, Italy)
0,75 litre

This Brunello by Lisini is from excellent year in Italy of  2003 and can be rightly described as one of the premier wines from this famous winyard. If you like the deep red colour, the well balanced taste and the raunchy body of a masterpiece of Italian wine making than this extremely well priced Brunello is for you! I would drink it after dinner when looking into the skies and pondering: why do we ever have to go home? Please do leave some for the owners!

2003 Barolo I Tre Ciabot, Dry, Winery Cascina Ballarin (Piedmont, Italy)
0,75 litre

We would rather keep this wine to ourselves. If you like a Barolo and if you find that it is this special mood that makes you decide to open a grand Barolo rather than a Brunello of  similar quality and if you frown at people, who don’t get the difference, than we cannot do better that this masterpiece by Cascina Ballarin. Drink and believe!

2003 Remelluri, Dry, Riserva, Bodegas La Granja (Zamora, Spain)
0,75 litre

In these days no wine list is complete without some fine Spanish reds. This very nice full bodied and yet well balanced wine from the best known locally Bodegas  Finca y Vinedos Dehesa La Granja . It goes well with all meats and vegetables and has a welcome light touch to it. Try it chilled!

This is a highly enjoyable Ribera from a strong local winery the Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro. The taste of ripe fruits, spices and earthy tones make this excellent easily drinkable red wine from Spain a perfect companion for the late evening. For an affordable long lasting taste, it gets hardly better than this red gem.
